Jacobson Elementary Before School Exercise Program
Wednesday, August 31, 2011
We had to make a few changes after the first week of school. Because of over 200 students in the gym every morning, it became a safety issue with all those students walking. There wouldn't have been any way we could have done any other type of exercise. Mr. Thompson decided to work out a blue and green day schedule. On green days, the 3rd-6th grade will have the exercise program. On blue days, the PS-2nd grade students will get to exercise. Please make note on your schedules.

Things are well under way in the physical education classes. We are working on skills in soccer for the 3rd-6th grade classes. We have worked on the soccer dribble, passing, trapping and goal scoring. The students have played "Recess", 2 on 1, and 3 on 3. We also got to play 4 court soccer in the gym on the day that it rained.
The K-2nd grade students are practicing different games while working on "personal space" and "general space". This helps them to learn how to move safely without bumping into others. If they can do this, then learning all other skills will be a safe environment for them. We have played "Majic Ball", Hula Hoop Car Road Trip", Snakes and Lizards, and, "Special Spot Warmup".
Students have been doing a great job of having their PE shoes for class. Older students do go outside when the weather permits so they do need an outside pair of running shoes. If you don't have PE shoes for your child, please let me know. We have extras here at school. Parents have donated these for others to use.
On green days, 4th grade, 6th grade, and 2nd grade have class. On blue days, Kindergarten, 5th grade, 1st, and 3rd grade have class. Please help your child dress for activity on those days.
If you ever have any questions about physical education classes, please call me at extension 353 or email me.

Second Reporting Period for Live Healthy Iowa Kids Will one of the Jacobson Elementary teams beat Mrs. Trampel?
The second reporting period has started for the Live Healthy Iowa Kids program. Besides exercise minutes this time, the students are keeping track of their vegetable servings for each day. This reporting period goes from February 16-March 15.
There is a challenge in place. Mrs. Trampel has challenged all nine Jacobson Elementary teams to beat her exercise minutes. If any team or teams beat her total minutes, then the team will win an extra PE fun day. That means that everyone on a team will not only have to exercise but get it turned in on time! Their team average will be calculated and if it beats Mrs. Trampel's total minutes then the team will win the fun day.
The recording sheets will need to be turned in by March 17 to count towards the challenge. If you need another sheet, log onto livehealthyiowakids.org. Click on fitness plans under resources and choose the category individual activity/nutrition trackers. Click on the "easy way for kids to keep track of activity and nutrition for each reporting period. Then click on the second reporting period and print it off.
MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN!!
In the first reporting period, our winner in the drawing for the first set of Speed Stacks was McKenna Pentico. To be eligible for the drawing, a student had to have at least 1200 exercise minutes and turn in their reporting sheet on time. Congratulations to McKenna Pentico.
Jump Rope for Heart On Wednesday, March 2
The 3rd and 4th grade students will be particpating in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart on Wednesday, March 2 at 10:30-11:40. Students are obtaining pledges and donations to go towards helping to cure heart disease and strokes. Then on March 2, they will jump on a jump rope team to help promote good exercise in the prevention of heart disease. Students will also earn prizes according to the amount they obtain in donations. Please contact a Jacobson Elementary 3rd or 4th grade student to donate towards this good cause.
Students will need to wear comfortable clothing with layers to take off if they get hot while jumping. In honor of heart month, they may wear red cloting. Students may also bring water bottles already filled, a blanket to sit on when not jumping and CDs to play for music. Students should not bring Ipods or MP3 players. Donation evelopes are due on March 2. We will also have a memory "heart" once again this year. Students may put up a "memory" heart in honor of a loved one who has past away from heart disease.
If you have any questions, please email or call Mrs. Trampel

Something NEW in the Jacobson Elementary PE program
Friday, January 14, 2011
The 2nd-6th grade students are doing a new unit in PE classes called Sport Stacking. It involves using specialized cups called Speed Stacks and stacking them in a certain order called stacks such as 3-3-3, 3-6-3, or 1-10-1 stack. The actual competition involves using all of these for the cycle stack. Many activities can be used while doing the stacks. Fitness activities with Sport Stacking are amongst the favorite of the students, Speed Stacks can be used in the classroom or at home, also.
What are the benefits of Sport Stacking?
Sport Stacking helps students develop bilateral proficiency equal performance on both sides of the body. By increasing bilateral proficiency, a student develops a greater percentage of the right side of the brain, which houses awareness, focus, creativity and rhythm. Stacking helps train the brain for sports and other activities where the use of both hands is important, such as playing a musical instrument or using the computer. Sequencing and patterning are also elements of sport stacking, which can help with reading and math skills.
Benefits
FITNESS:
Sport Stacking is a fitness based sport that kids from all backgrounds and abilities can do. For the athlete and non-athlete alike, regardless if you are instructing eighth graders or kindergartners, sport stacking can be a great enhancement for your fitness routine. With over 70 fitness based activities, sport stacking helps to motivate kids to be active and fit. Teachers and parents also like sport stacking because it can be done at home. Much like a Scholastic book order encourages kids to read at home, a Group Order through Speed Stacks encourages fitness at home.SELF-ESTEEM:
One of the comments we receive consistently from teachers, parents and school administrators is how sport stacking levels the playing field for their kids. Non-Athletic kids can now compete head to head with their more athletic counterparts. This significantly raises their self-esteem, motivating them to work harder in PE and be excited to participate. It's a WIN, WIN!ACADEMICS:
Today schools, teachers and parents are focused more than ever on academic achievement. Sport stacking not only promotes physical fitness, but also academic learning. Students that sport stack on a regular basis have shown increases in test scores and levels of concentration. This is achieved by students using both their right and left sides of their brain. When students sport stack they are crossing the "midline" of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. These new connections help to spur brain growth which in turn promotes greater academic achievement.Jacobson Elementary is doing a school order. If your family would like to order Speed Stacks and other equipment, please fill out the order form that your child brought home and send it back to school with the money. You may also go online at speedstacks.com and order through our school group account. Read more...
