Live Healthy Iowa Kids Program

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

All of the 5th and 6th grade students and my junior high PE classes are taking part in the Live Healthy Iowa Program.  Students are keeping track of their exercise minutes and nutrition.  This is part of the statewide and countywide program to get students thinking more about being healthier and exercising more.

Attached is the tracking sheets for the students to use.  These sheets were also handed out in PE class for the junior high students.  I'm keeping the 5th and 6th grade students' tracking sheets.

As part of a kickoff, Lu Fink came and did Jazzercise for the 5th and 6th grade students.

Here is the link to the website for this program.

Junior High 8th period PE student/parent letter

Mrs. Trampel’s Junior High PE classes- Period 8
I am really excited to teach junior high students again.  It has been 6 years since I last had junior high students in a PE class.  What an exciting year it is going to be in physical education during 8th period PE classes.  The room that we have in the gym and sometimes the outside field will allow us to do varied activities and increase student’s success.  Physical Education is essential in every student’s life.  It not only develops you physically, but also cognitively and emotionally.  It is our hope with a diverse curriculum that you will strive to be physically active once you leave Belmond-Klemme Junior/Senior High School.  Our overall goal is to teach you to be lifelong learners in physical activity.

Expectations:
·         Follow directions first time given
·         Be respectful to peers, teachers, self, and equipment
·         Keep hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself
·         Work hard  and go above your potential
·         Have fun
Consequences:
·         Loss of points for the day and/or possible detention
Grading:
You will be assessed in a variety of ways
·         Participation/Effort-20 points
·         Respect-20 points
·         Being prepared for class-10points
·         Written/skill tests-varies
All students need to come to class ready to participate according to the activities for class.  This would usually mean shorts, t-shirt and running shoes. Be in the gym walking and ready to go by 2:35.  After that, you will be counted tardy.

Absences:
To be able to get a passing grade, most absences will need to be made up.  Check with me on what you can do to make up class.  Sometimes what we do in class could be made up.  Otherwise there are several examples listed below as to what can be used for makeup.  Basic rule is that school athletic practices and competitions cannot be used for makeup.  Relatives cannot sign you off for a makeup.
Examples of make ups for class:
Fitness center workout, golfing, bowling, dance classes, community service, Jazzercise classes, swimming, weightlifting at school, etc.

Medical Excuses:
A medical excuse must be signed by a physician to excuse you from activity in a PE class.  If you do not have one, an alternative activity will be given for you to do.

I’m only at this building during 8th hour.  Otherwise, you can find me at Jacobson Elementary from 7:20-2:20.  If you have questions at any time this semester, please email me at kay.trampel@bkcsd.org or call me at extension 353 and leave a message.  I keep my blog updated weekly so you can check my blog called “Jacobson Elementary Gymshorts” to keep informed about what’s going on in 8th period PE class.  It will be listed under the Jacobson Elementary Blogs with my name.

Junior High PE second semester classes

If you are a new student to the class this semester, you will have to read the expectation sheet and then have it signed and turned back in to Mrs. Trampel.  This sheet turned in counts for a grade.  A sheet will be given out in class on the first day but you may also access it here on "Gymshorts" blog.

Something somewhat new this semester is a fitness class period at least once a week.  If you have PE on a Wednesday, that will be considered Wellness Wednesday.  If you don't have PE on a Wednesday of that week, then you will have it on Thursday.  I will take into consideration the sports schedule and that could change to a Tuesday if need be.  Fitness is an important in the health and well-being of our own physical bodies.  We can't get better at it if we don't actually practice it.

Activities planned for the week of January 14-18

January 14- Green  Day: Go over guidelines and expectations.  New students to 8th hour will get their expectation sheet. Circle Kickball
January 15- Blue Day: Go over guidelines and expectations.  New students to 8th hour will get their expectation sheet. Circle Kickball
January 16- Green Day: Early Out Wellness Wednesday
January 17- Blue Day: Fitness Training Thursday
January 18- Green Day: Circle Kickball
